Layer Hen Rearing
At Rossgro, we rear our own pullets from day-old chicks to the point of lay, a process that spans approximately 17 weeks. We understand that effective management during this critical rearing period ensures pullets reach the laying house in optimal condition, ready to produce high-quality eggs.
Since 2013, we have successfully produced our own point-of-lay pullets, eliminating the need for external purchases. Approximately 30% of these pullets are sold to external customers. We rear two trusted breeds, Amberlink and Hy-Line, known for their consistent performance. Both cage and floor-rearing systems are utilized, catering to different market needs: cage-rearing is ideal for commercial layer production, while floor-rearing aligns with the requirements of free-range systems.
Animal welfare is a top priority at Rossouw Poultry. We adhere to the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare as established by the World Organisation of Animal Health and comply with SAPA standards to ensure optimal production. Our Rearing Unit operates through a collaborative approach, involving our consulting veterinarian, production manager, farm manager, and nutritionist to maintain the highest standards of care and efficiency.
